![]() I don't like being sober, so why would I want to be sober every minute for the rest of my life? So I can live 30 years longer? I've thought about it, but never seriously considered it. But they're not.īut like, really, have you or anyone around you ever considered some strict rehab? If my problems were causing other people problems, they'd stage an intervention within a week. Everything I've seen in my life confirms it. I know that this is a very cynical viewpoint, but I honestly believe it. I'm not causing them any problems, so why would they bother? My mom is very bothered that I'm not married and I don't have any children, but she can look past it because I have a sister who has young kids, so she still has grandchildren. ![]() They care about me and they love me, but it's easier for them to ignore the problem and continue living their lives than it is for them to confront me and try to force me to change my life. And I never ask them for anything or embarrass them. My parents like me because I am good company, I can easily charm their friends, and they can brag that I am relatively successful and independent. I'm sure they would like to see me cut back so that I don't die so early, but if I never had another drink or another line in my life, they would be losing something. These aren't bad people, they're good people. It probably wouldn't be in their best interest to see me sober. I don't show up at their house wasted in the middle of the night trying to break in, I never ask to borrow money, and I never fight them or try to hit on their wives or anything like that. My friends like me because I am fun to hang around with, and I'm a great drinking/party buddy. People don't really care about each other, they care about what those other people can do for them, or how they make them feel. It's because my problems don't inconvenience anyone else. I've thought about this, and here is what I've concluded: I feel like if you were jobless/broke/living in a shitty apartment, people would view your life very differently.ĭefinitely. I'm not trying sound high and mighty or preachy either, so i'm sorry if it's coming off as such. I can't even imagine what it must be like to have a problem since the age of 11, because that's a really long time.but do you want to change? because you're not getting any younger or healthier. Watching someone go through liver failure is one of the most horrible things ever. That ended when there was liver failure at the age of 42 and no donor could be found. My aunt was a closeted alcoholic who was also just a 'fun' party person to be around. Sorry, I'm just not going to sugar coat anything you're an addict that's probably knocking off about 30 years of your life expectancy. But like, really, have you or anyone around you ever considered some strict rehab? Not to say at all that what you've done with your life isn't meaningful in it's own way, and hell it sounds like you've had some great financial success which is awesome. ![]() It also seems like because you've been doing this for so long, that you and the people around you have attached it to who you are as a person as being part of your personality (which isn't good because it's not who you are and you don't have to be this way). I'm probably going to be downvoted for this, but why is there such a lighthearted attitude about your problem, especially where people joke about it? I feel like if you were jobless/broke/living in a shitty apartment, people would view your life very differently.
